This is a reproduction of an original painting depciting Circe & Odysseus. Circe is a Greek goddess, most often portrayed as a femme-fatale. However here she is depicted as an innocent, vulnerable young woman, who did not seek to have her home invaded by a ship full of soldiers. The golden halo around Circe’s head is reminiscent of Roman religious paintings and seeks to highlight her divine status in contrast to her more common association with witches. Further, Odysseus is shown here as a swine, which emphasises his carnal form and changes the power dynamic of the story.
