This whimsical painting is inspired by the often unknown origin story of Medusa. Medusa was originally a beautiful young woman, with long ringlets of golden hair. While praying at the temple of Athena, she catches the eye of the sea god Poseidon, who rapes her (or seduces her, depending on the version). Athena is so enraged at her temple being defiled, that she takes her revenge on poor Medusa by taking away Medusa’s most prized feature: her hair. It is replaced with deadly serpents.

Here we see Medusa with her hair in an elaborate updo which is reminiscent of 18th century French fashion. Although her pet snakes are mostly concealed, we can see a little snake head popping out from the side of Medusa's neck.
