This print is part of a larger body of work that examines the gender values that are imparted onto children through popular nursery rhymes and fairy tales. This print, in particular, sets the women’s #metoo movement against the backdrop of the Georgie Porgie nursery rhyme. The rhyme says “Georgie Porgie kissed the girls and made them cry” and it has been suggested that it is referring King George II, who had numerous mistresses. Nursery rhymes were once a way of communicating social value or situations in an era where most were illiterate.

The #metoo campaign is depicted here as a physical protest, making reference to the earlier feminist demonstrations. However, the recent #metoo movement was largely an online phenomenon, which signifies a pivotal change in the way women’s issues are discussed and disseminated in public. Social media allows women to share experiences of sexual harassment and assault in a way that has never been done before. The popularity of the #metoo movement highlighted the extent and the scale of the problem. Hopefully this is a positive development for women’s liberation as social media can empower and unite women all around the world.
