This painting is of the Three Fates, or Moirai. The three Greek goddesses assign individual destinies to mortals at birth. Their names are Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Alloter) and Atropos (the Inflexible). Clotho spun the “thread” of human fate, Lachesis dispensed it, and Atropos cut the thread, thus determining the individual's moment of death. The thread of life is shown here as a red ribbon. In the background are hidden symbols (a spool, shears and scroll) which represent the roles of three goddesses.
